There are about 22, 000 trilobite species worldwide… all extinct. About 4,400 are recorded from Britain. Trilobites lived from 525 to 250 million years ago, before the dinosaurs. They are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than they are to the shrimps and woodlice they resemble. Their closest living relatives are horseshoe crabs whose babies are called trilobites  They are the first fossils with eyes; compound eyes made of calcite crystal which makes them unique in the whole of the animal kingdom. They were possibly the first animals to see anything in focus!

The World’s largest is the Ordovician Canadian species Isotelus rex at about 70cm and 445 million years old. But… not far behind is the St David’s giant trilobite, Paradoxides davidis;  Britain’s largest at up to 60 cm.  P. davidis is older too, coming from the Cambrian period about 510 million years ago in a time known as the St David’s Epoch. It’s cool that Britain’s largest trilobite harks from near Britain’s smallest city. The National Museum of Wales dubbed the first specimen found in 1862, Wales’s national fossil (not an official title though).
