The Image
Privet Hawk Moth Sphinx ligustri Linnaeus, 1758
This beautiful moth has a 12 centimetres wingspan at rest. It can be found in urban areas, forests and woodlands.
As its name describes, the caterpillars feed on privet. Whilst it will eat garden or Japanese privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) it’s natural British food plants are wild privet (Ligustrum vulgare), ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and guelder rose (Viburnum opulus). As well as holly (Ilex aquifolium) and honey suckle (Lonicera peryclimenum) and some non-native plants such as, lilac (Syringa vulgaris), snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) and Forsythia.
The male privet hawk moth can make a hissing sound, if disturbed, by rubbing together a set of scales and spines at the end of its abdomen.
Their larvae are usually found between July and August, when preparing to become a pupa, they bury themselves in the earth. They then fly in the following June.
