The Image

After all the research Ian did to create the British Cephalopods piece, he had to complete the cephalopods collection with this beautiful image of the giant squid. Unlike the other cephalopod pieces this one is in colour to show the magnificent metallic colours on this exquisite beast.

Until relatively recently, the giant squid was considered to be a mythical beast and subject of cryptozoology.

The giant squid is often depicted attacking boats or wrestling sperm whales. This image just shows the squid in all it’s glory. The first image shows the face, in particular, those amazing eyes. The second shows it with its capture tentacles retracted, which is how they normally hold them when they swim. The third (central) image shows the capture tentacles extended (reputedly giving a total length of up to 18m), they are shown in the ‘zipped up’ state as these tentacles have interlocking suckers, which allow them to be held tightly together, but nobody knows why!

This artwork is based on the giant squid that washed up in Scarborough in 1933, with any missing details taken from photos of Norwegian specimens and live footage of pacific animals. You can read more about Ian’s obsession with the giant squid here!

Material

This giclée print is reproduced from Ian’s original ink and watercolour piece and will add a talking point to any room.

The artwork is beautifully printed onto sustainable Hahnemühle Hemp 290gsm Fine Art Paper. An eco friendly paper, with a natural white tone. It has a subtle surface giving the paper a silky feel.

Hemp is a resource saving plant whose robust and long-lasting fibres have been a part of paper production for centuries. The image is printed using archival quality, Fine Art Trade Guild approved printers, inks and papers — tests have shown the prints can last over 100 years.
