The brittle star
The sand brittle star Ophiura ophiura is a member of the class Ophiuroidea which is the largest group of echinoderms. We chose this incredible ‘other worldly” creature to help raise awareness of how echinoderms are being affected by microplastics. We were really pleased to be in touch with Marine plastic scientist and doctoral research student Winnie Courtene-Jones, who has written a blog for us about her research into how micro plastics are being eaten by deep sea brittle stars at depths of 2500m.
