Peppered Moth Fine Art Print
The Peppered Moth Fine Art Print is an A5 (21 x 14.8 cm) print.
The Image
Peppered Moth Biston betularia Linnaeus, 1758
The peppered moth and its evolution over the last two hundred years has been studied in great detail. At the beginning of this period, the vast majority of peppered moths had light coloured wing patterns. This effectively camouflaged them against the lichens and light coloured trees where they rested.
Due to widespread pollution during the period of the Industrial Revolution in England, many of the lichens died out, and the trees which peppered moths rested on became blackened by soot. This caused most of the light-coloured moths to die off as they were easily spotted by predators.
At the same time, the darker coloured moths, carbonaria, flourished because they could hide on the soot darkened trees.
Since then, with improved environmental standards, light-coloured peppered moths have again become common, and the dramatic change in the peppered moth’s population has remained a subject of much interest and study.
