The Image

Curled Octopus Eledone cirrhosa (Lamarck, 1798) – the commonest UK Octopus

From living animals encountered in Cardigan Bay. The dorsal image shows the characteristic pose adopted when the animal buries itself in the sand.

This is the most common and most likely octopus to be found in UK waters, it is known as the curled, lesser or horned octopus. Its larger cousin the common octopus lives further south and is only occasionally found here. Octopus are highly intelligent problem solvers but only live for two or 3 years.
