The exquisite chough is the least common member of The exquisite chough is the least common member of the corvids! We’ve been lucky enough to see them around the coast here in Ceredigion and in Pembrokeshire. They’re easily distinguished by their bright red beak and legs. We usually get blurred pics as we tend to watch in awe as they fly past! This beauty gave us a full demo of its feeding habits - probing into the soil looking for invertebrates.
Did you know that legend has it that King Arthur didn’t die, but transformed into a chough!
You can read the blog about identifying various members of the crow family - link in our bio xx
After MANY years of being together Ian will still After MANY years of being together Ian will still patiently answer me when I ask yet again ‘is that a rook or a crow?’ (It’s usually a jackdaw 😳) So for anyone like me, Ian’s written a quick blog about how to tell the rooks from the ravens etc.
If you’re really good and read to the end there’s a free downloadable info/colouring sheet xx
Well there’s a fun fact to blow your mind!! And Well there’s a fun fact to blow your mind!! And we think we’re the clever ones 😂
If you have trouble telling your crows from your rooks and your rooks from your jackdaws - keep an eye out for something new tomorrow 🪶 xx
Is this flying or falling with style? We’ve been Is this flying or falling with style?
We’ve been pondering ravens after finding the wind ravaged remains of their nest the other day!
Did you know they form powerful pair bonds, often for life and build huge nests, usually on cliff ledges or in the forks of large trees.
The nests can be the size of an armchair and take a lot of effort to build! They get used over and over again for years, with birds returning to the same spot and making repairs. We really hope the local ravens return to the Scots pine.
The picture, although hard to make out is a raven seemingly at play. He was twisting and plunging downwards and then flying upside down for a few seconds - a joy to watch!
A walk in the woods after a blustery weekend and t A walk in the woods after a blustery weekend and the ravens nest that’s been in the big old Scots pine for the last five years had blown down ☹️
What made it so much worse is that the nest hanging from the tree and on the ground is made up of lots of beach plastic 😔
The woods are at least a mile from the nearest beach!!
The beautiful scarlet malachite beetle, sharing a The beautiful scarlet malachite beetle, sharing a courtship ‘kiss’!
There’s a blog to celebrate Valentine’s Day all about courtship in the animal kingdom 💚💙 click the link in our bio if you fancy a read. Did you know that dung beetles pair for life and build a home together, he brings poo home to her each day 💕
Yes our blogs are like buses, there’s none for ages and then...
