So the challenge to Jake for today’s Friday fact So the challenge to Jake for today’s Friday fact to blow your mind - find an exciting fact about a garden bird!! Challenge accepted - the gold crest, what a beauty and so small.
We had a visit from gold-crests last May. They made a brief appearance in the oak tree at the bottom of the garden. In normal circumstances we’d have missed them, but because we were in lockdown 1 and spending lots of time in the garden we were there for their visit. What is it they say about clouds and silver linings?
Happy weekend xx
All this talk of birds visiting the garden got us All this talk of birds visiting the garden got us thinking about the best foods to put out for the birds 🪶This got us thinking about how each birds beak shape dictates how and what they eat! So Ian’s put together a table of regular bird visitors and what they need. You can read about it in the latest blog post ☝🏼 And don’t forget your free garden birds colouring sheet if you haven’t grabbed one yet xx
We’re starting to get some more visitors to our We’re starting to get some more visitors to our bird feeders. There’s a daily flurry of long tailed tits who arrive in a gloriously noisy assembly at the same time each day, you could almost set your clock by them! The added entertainment for us is, our neighbour trundles down the hill at the same time every day, just after the long tailed tits have left! Yes this is how exciting life is at the moment 🤣
Photo by Ben - a miracle shot through less than clean windows!
Taxonomy of the house sparrow! The house sparrow Taxonomy of the house sparrow!
The house sparrow was among the first animals to be given a scientific name in the modern system of biological classification. It was described by Carl Linnaeus - the father of modern classification, in 1758.
It’s also one of the birds you’re most likely to see when you look out the window 😁
If you’d like the taxonomy colouring sheet, it’s available as a free download ☝🏼
This weeks free colouring sheet is garden birds. B This weeks free colouring sheet is garden birds. Ben has created this one, it includes the robin, goldfinch, sparrow and blue-tit. Link in bio to get a copy.
We’ve put some bird feeders up closer to our kitchen window, we seem to spend a lot of time at the kitchen table at the moment! Our favourite visitor so far is a nut hatch, we’d love to know who’s visiting your bird feeders xx
A quick post for anyone struggling with the prospe A quick post for anyone struggling with the prospect of home schooling today! The Hughes boys - Jake, George and Ben were home educated. Some days were better than others, there were days when we’d dress up as our favourite literary characters and read from our favourite books, I’d sit back and wait for my ‘mother of the week’ award to arrive!! Other days I’d shove a maths work sheet at them and go and rock in a corner!
These are pics from typical days, we’d try to find ways to get outside and connect with nature, it always made everything feel a little better!
And these three grew into fairly awesome humans who we’re incredibly proud of!
We’re sharing some resources/colouring sheets/taxonomy info, hopefully they’ll be of some help! There’ll be a new one later today ☝🏼
Enjoy the process, it’s fun to look back on - honestly!!
